In order to get your CEUs, please reply to this blog post with a well-developed COMMENT by November 9. Prompt: Based on Chapter 1 of Readicide, in addition to the Barile article and the piece called "Not Reading: The 800 Pound Mockingbird in the Classroom," how can teachers and school leaders, albeit systems at large, stop Readicide in today's schools?
Agenda for October 19, 2016 at the LCHS Media Center (3:30 - 4:30 pm):
- Kelly Gallagher’s Activity on the Power of Reading, Writing, Speaking, & Listening
- We will read a piece of difficult text three times, scoring our level of understanding from 1 - 10 after each reading draft in boxes 1, 2, and 3. This is to be done independently.
- Then, in the reflection area, we will write a brief objective summary of the text and its central idea. Do this before you collaborate with a friend. Rate your understanding a 4th time.
- Collaborate with friends now. Then rate your understanding in box 5.
- Finally, we will discuss as a large class. Rate your final understanding in box 6.
- Scrumblr Feedback: http://scrumblr.ca/lcscollaborative
- Discuss how your ratings changed over time and implications for teaching and learning.
- Readicide & Burke Purpose and Introduction (ELA, Social Studies, and any other interested colleagues 6-12): Google Slides Presentation
- Readicide Defined: page 2
- Hard Talk Checklist: page 135
