1) In his introduction, Tough discusses the cognitive hypothesis — the commonly held assumption that success depends primarily on cognitive skills. How is the cognitive hypothesis reflected in the curriculum you teach?

- We want our hands on the curriculum they discussed in the book (Chicago). We want to really teach character or just play lip service?

I have truly enjoyed participating in this type book study, and would definitely do it again. I absolutely loved this book, and read it almost in one sitting....(which makes posting blogs at a later date a little more difficult!!)

I have always found this type of PLC experience quite beneficial. The structure, with all participants, reading the same book, is a necessity, but the free-form of the exercise, with participants each bringing to the fore the aspect(s) of the subject that appealed to, struck, confused and/or made them furrow their brow in puzzlement, is the real money. This individual-to-collective approach allows me to compare my own interpretation of the reading to that of others at the same time as it shows me things I did not even catch. The online dialogue of blog entries, with participants reading at varying paces and responding to each others’ takes on the material is also excellent. For these reasons, I would be pleased to do this again next year.

This type of book study is good because teachers' schedules are crammed full. This way we can read and participate when we can find a few minutes. Not sure that I could squeeze a book study in every year.

I have truly enjoyed working with you all in this book study. I have recommended this book for reading within our school for next year. Paul Tough has helped explain many of my head scratching moments I have had in my first year of working in an alternative school. I feel as though every educator should read this book and I look forward to continued book study opportunities within Lee County. Have a great summer everyone!
